In 1978, the Friends of the Houston Public Library held its first bargain book sale on the library plaza. Little could event organizers know that the one-day fundraiser would become an annual must-attend event for book lovers in the Houston area.
The Friends Annual Bargain Booksale has grown to a three-day event that currently encompasses an entire exhibition hall at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Preparation for the sale is a year-round process with hundreds of Friends’ members and volunteers sorting donated books in the Friends’ warehouse. In 1992, Board member Don Gray received the Mayor’s Award as Volunteer of the Year for his work with the book sale over the years.
Proceeds from the yearly sale are used to make an annual gift to the Houston Public Library to use, as they deem necessary.
