Friends Library Scholarship Fund
Recruitment of librarians continues to be a challenging issue for the Houston Public Library and libraries throughout the United States. As a response, HPL has developed a program designed to “grow their own” librarians.
Staff employed at HPL is encouraged to take advantage of the distance Master of Library Sciences (MLS) programs from University of North Texas, Texas Women’s University or any other programs available. To assist in this effort, the Friends have funded scholarships for selected staff in MLS programs.
Any eligible staff member can apply for the $3,000 scholarship. A Friends’ board-appointed committee reviews and approves applications.
Many staff members have successfully completed MLS programs while employed at the HPL. The support of the Friends has helped to make this program possible.
